What is Stem Cells?

A stem cell is a type of unspecialized cell that has the remarkable ability to develop into many different types of cells in the body. Stem cells can both self-renew (produce more stem cells through cell division) and differentiate (transform into specialized cells like muscle, nerve, or blood cells). This dual capacity gives them a critical role in growth, development, and tissue repair.

Key Characteristics:

  • Self-Renewal: Stem cells can divide and produce more stem cells over long periods.
  • Potency: Stem cells can differentiate into different cell types, ranging from one or a few specialized cells to nearly any cell in the body, depending on their type.

There are 2 types of stem cells, classified by their sources:

Type 1: Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) can develop into:

  • Red blood cells
  • Platelets
  • White blood cell group cells

Type 2: Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) can develop into:

  • Bone cells
  • Nerve cells
  • Fat cells
  • Cartilage cells, etc.

You Are the One Who Chooses to Give Your Child the Most Important Opportunity

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a health and life guarantee for your child’s future by storing stem cells at the best possible time.

In today’s era of continuous medical advancement, preparing for a healthier future is something you can easily plan and provide for your loved ones, especially your child—or even yourself. This can be done through “stem cell banking,” which is increasingly recognized and widely discussed. Stem cells, or progenitor cells, are like the body’s repair units. When cells in the body deteriorate, stem cells divide and transform to replace the damaged cells. Therefore, storing stem cells is akin to being prepared with spare parts for your body at all times. Whether facing serious illnesses or age-related conditions in the future, the stored stem cells could become an invaluable tool for treatment in ways you might not expect.

Why Choose Thai StemLife?

Stem Cells: A New Option to Prepare for the Future

If you or a loved one ever needs stem cells for treatment and none are stored, did you know that the chances of finding a compatible donor are just 1 in 50,000?

  • 100% compatibility when using one’s own stem cells
  • 1 in 4 when siblings share the same parents
  • 1 in 50,000 for individuals of the same ethnicity
  • 1 in 200,000 for mixed-race individuals

Storing your own stem cells is a proactive choice, ensuring readiness to combat diseases that may arise in the future.

There is no need for tissue compatibility (HLA) testing when using one’s own stem cells, unlike with donor-derived stem cells.

Utilising one’s own stem cells eliminates the risk of immune rejection or adverse reactions.

The cost of storing stem cells from umbilical cord and placental blood is more affordable compared to other stem cell collection methods.

Benefits of Storing Stem Cells from Umbilical Cord and Placental Blood

Umbilical cord and placental blood are rich sources of stem cells, offering high potential, purity, cleanliness, and sterility.

This method is widely accepted as the simplest and most convenient, requiring minimal time, ensuring safety, and causing no harm or discomfort to the mother or baby.

Stem cell owners can directly access their stored stem cells for personal medical treatments when needed, without relying on donor availability.

Methods and Procedures for Collecting Stem Cells from Umbilical Cord and Placental Blood

The obstetrician delivers the baby.

A pediatrician or nursing team cleans and examines the newborn.

The obstetrician collects blood from the placenta and umbilical cord still within the mother’s womb.

The collected blood is stored in blood collection bags, carefully checked for accuracy, and transported to the laboratory within 48 hours after collection.

The blood bags are processed in a Clean Room (Class 100) laboratory, where stem cells are isolated using the advanced Sepax® automated system. This technology can extract more stem cells compared to other methods while ensuring no contamination. The extracted stem cells are then cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen storage tanks at a consistent temperature of -196°C.
